Biker Billy Jalapeño

Biker Billy Jalapeño is a variety that was named in honour of Jalapeño enthusiast Billy Hufnagle, an American motorcyclist, food editor, cookery book author and television personality who performed as Biker Billy. The plants have an upright and fairly compact growth habit and produce good yields of chunky, thick-walled, juicy chillies which grow to a maximum size of about three inches and are tapered to a wide blunt end. The fruit of this variety matures slightly faster than some other Jalapeño varieties and ripens from dark green to scarlet red. A few weeks before the ripening process begins a fair amount of corking appears and they turn a darker shade of green. Some people describe the heat of this variety as being quite hot for a Jalapeño while others describe it as being very mild. Perhaps the heat can vary significantly depending on the accession because in my case all of the chillies, both at the unripe and ripe stages, were heat-free. Biker Billy Jalapeño chillies have an excellent flavour and are great in salsas, sauces, stews, breads, stir fries, rice dishes, bean dishes and chili con carne. They also make a good choice for pickling.
