Zimbabwe Bird's Eye

Species: Capsicum frutescens | Origin: Zimbabwe | Pungency: Hot

Zimbabwe Bird's Eye, sometimes referred to as 'Peri Peri', is a compact bushy variety that produces excellent yields of chillies which grow to a maximum size of about one inch in length and are tapered to a blunt tip. The plants grow well in small pots and the chillies start green and ripen through orange and then to red. The name 'Peri Peri', also spelt 'Piri Piri' and 'Pili Pili', is synonymous with African cuisine and means 'pepper pepper' in the Swahili language. Lots of Bird's Eye-type chillies are grown in Africa and the variety shown below comes from Zimbabwe, which is a landlocked country bordered by South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Mozambique. Zimbabwe Bird's Eye chillies have a very good flavour and are great for spicing up soups, stews, sauces and rice dishes. They also dry very easily and make a very tasty powder.
